    "Samuel"

    2015

It was midnight, and the moment we walked through the door I knew our lives had changed.  In my mind I could only think, "This is not the life we want.   This is not what we want to go through."  But some choices in life we don't get to make.  Like it or not, we were in the children's oncology unit at UVA.
Samuel was visiting the doctor's office for a cough, when the doctor found a swollen lymph node/lump at the base of his neck.  After a short round of antibiotics to rule out infection, Samuel had an ultrasound at AMC on Friday, April 10th 2015.  On Monday he underwent extensive testing at UVA. He returned home that evening, but within ten minutes of being home, the surgeon called and told his family to return immediately.  The tests had confirmed cancer and there were masses around Samuel's heart.  On Tuesday morning Samuel had Pulmonary Function Tests(PFTs) to assure he could withstand surgery, and as soon as he passed the PFTs he went into surgery.
To say that the next few weeks and months went by in a blur would be an understatement. Doctors, surgeries, chemo, sickness...all while caring for our three other children and trying to manage bills and insurance; our world was upside down. The support we received from family and friends, along with a lot of prayer, sustained us during that time.  We were so touched to learn that the local community was organizing a fundraising dinner for us.  Samuel's Supper™ was such a blessing, and kept us afloat during an emotional time.
